Welcome to the Materials Under Extreme Conditions Laboratory at UCLA

We are a Mechanics of Materials Group exploring the physics of materials under high pressure, temperature, and strain rate loading using advanced experimental and computational techniques.

About the Group

Our group focuses on exploring the design, development, and characterization of materials and structures under extreme pressures, temperatures, and strain-rates. We explore fundamental mechanics including phase-transformation, strength, and fracture across micro-structural to macroscopic spatial scales. This is done using advanced experimental facilities such as plate impact, laser-driven impact, and split Hopkinson pressure bar coupled with diagnostic techniques including laser interferometry, ultra-high-speed imaging, in-situ x-ray diffraction, and digital image correlation.
